Salmonella and Listeria Threaten Pet Food Safety
In a concerning move for pet owners, Viva Raw LLC has issued a voluntary recall for two lots of its dog and cat food products due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. This recall follows routine testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, which flagged the affected lots on August 25, 2025. Fortunately, as of now, no illnesses have been reported in pets or humans related to this recall.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects:
- Lot 21495: Viva Ground Beef for Dogs; Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies
- Lot 21975: Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chicken for Cats; Viva Pure Chicken
These products were distributed to consumers across various states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, New York, and South Carolina, between July 2, 2025, and August 21, 2025. Pet owners are urged to check their supplies, as the products come in frozen 1 lb bricks with the lot number displayed on top.
Health Risks to Pets and Humans
Pets affected by Salmonella or Listeria may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. However, some pets might remain asymptomatic carriers, potentially posing a risk to other animals and humans. It's crucial for pet owners to seek veterinary care if their pets have consumed the recalled food.
Humans exposed to these bacteria can experience symptoms such as abdominal cramping, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Notably, pregnant women, infants, and those with compromised immune systems are at heightened risk. The FDA advises anyone experiencing these symptoms after contact with the affected products to consult a healthcare provider immediately.
How to Respond to the Recall
Viva Raw has set up a responsive plan for those in possession of the contaminated products. Consumers are encouraged to reach out via email at info@vivarawpets.com for refunds and disposal instructions. It's vital to safely discard any recalled products to protect children, pets, and wildlife from potential harm.
As the pet food industry increasingly confronts safety challenges, this incident underscores the importance of vigilant screening and consumer awareness. Veterinary clinic owners and practitioners should remain informed and proactive in advising their clients, ensuring that pet welfare leads the way in food safety discussions.
